With winter behind us, it’s time to get outside and get active! Medical Mutual’s wellness experts recommend three low-impact outdoor exercises that are perfect for older adults:

  1. Walking: An early morning walk is gentle on the knees. It's a great way to enjoy the cool morning air and soak up some vitamin D. Take your walk a step further by adding intervals. For example, walk briskly for 30 seconds, then walk slowly or at a regular pace for one minute. Repeat this five times.
  2. Yoga: Combine a walk in the park with some yoga for strength training and balance. Many parks provide natural shade and a serene environment.
  3. Swimming: Make the most of the summer months by swimming in outdoor pools. Swimming is a full-body workout that strengthens muscles and improves mental health and sleep quality.

Preventing Falls

“While the winter season carries a higher risk of falls, the summer months can be challenging as well,” said Dr. Olapeju Olasokan, Assistant Medical Director at Medical Mutual. “Heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heat stroke can increase falls risk.”

Be sure to dress for the weather. Wear firmly fitted exercise clothing that allows ease of mobility and comfort. Rain can make surfaces slippery and muddy. It is important to wear walking shoes with good traction and walk on dry, even surfaces.

“Maintaining strength is vital for daily activities and preventing falls,” said Chaz McGrain, Senior Fitness Program Manager at Medical Mutual.

Strength training can be done at home and without fancy equipment. Start with squats to a chair or bench, or bicep curling and shoulder pressing soup cans. If you have a MedMutual Advantage plan, it includes our Chronic Condition Management Program, which gives you access to digital physical therapy through Sword Health. Your plan also includes SilverSneakers®, which offers memberships to participating gyms and access to pools and yoga. Virtual classes are available.
