Telehealth, also known as telemedicine, allows you to meet virtually with a healthcare provider. These appointments offer a convenient alternative to traditional in-person visits. Whether you need to speak to a provider about new health concerns, like a sore throat or a sinus infection, or managing chronic conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, you can have that conversation in the privacy of your home. Ashley Spitler, Supervisor of Customer Experience Project Management at Medical Mutual, shares what you need to know about telehealth services and how to get started.

Enhanced Access

You can easily schedule virtual appointments just as you would in-person visits.

“There are several advantages to telehealth, including the ability to participate from the comfort of home or any private setting,” Spitler said. “This convenience makes it easier for you to prioritize your health, even on a busy schedule.”

Additionally, you can choose on-demand telehealth visits as an alternative to going to an urgent care center. Keep in mind that a telehealth appointment may not be appropriate for your medical condition and you may need to see your provider in person to receive treatment.

Preparing for a Telehealth Appointment

Your healthcare provider will let you know what you will need for your telehealth visit. Make sure you have the have the necessary technology in place ahead of your appointment. You will need a device with a camera, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. Be sure to install any necessary apps and test your device’s microphone, camera and internet connection well before your visit.

As with any appointment, come prepared. Bring your medical information, including a list of medications, any symptoms you’re experiencing and any questions you may have for the provider.

Ensuring Security and Privacy

Telehealth appointments adhere to the same confidentiality standards as in-person visits. Healthcare providers use secure communication platforms to conduct these virtual appointments.

To ensure privacy, it’s important to have your call in a quiet and private setting. Avoid public places where someone might overhear or see you during your appointment. Do not schedule a telehealth visit while you are driving or are engaged in other distracting activities.

Coverage and Cost

Your health plan determines how virtual visits are covered. Typically, telehealth appointments are billed similarly to in-person visits and vary based on the type of provider you’re seeing. Medicare Advantage members can view their Evidence of Coverage at MedMutual.com/MAPlanInfo or call Customer Care for more details about cost-sharing amounts for provider visits. Members not on Medicare can access their Certificate or Benefit Book by logging into My Health Plan. Look for it in the “Benefits & Coverage” menu.
