How and Why to Add Your Spouse to Your Health Plan

Whether you're deep into wedding planning or you've already exchanged vows and rings, maybe you're thinking about adding your loved one to your health insurance plan. We understand that making sure your family is well and cared for is a top priority.
The Advantages of Adding Your Spouse
The Medical Mutual Human Resources team shares the advantages and what to expect when you add your (future) spouse to your health plan:
Cost Savings
Having an insurance plan that’s best for your family can save time and money. Each family is unique. That might look like:
- If your spouse already has employer-sponsored coverage of their own, it may be more cost-effective to have them join your plan if the premiums, deductible or out-of-pocket maximum are more affordable.
- If you are married and have children, it can be beneficial to enroll the entire family on one parent’s employer-sponsored plan, as the greater number of covered members will help the family reach any deductible and out-of-pocket maximums more quickly.
Benefits and Coverage
When you add your spouse to your health plan, he or she will enjoy all of your same plan benefits. This means there may be differences in covered services or access to a larger network of providers. Wellness programs, if offered by your employer, are an added benefit and can enhance your family's well-being.
The Process of Adding Your Spouse
The process of adding your spouse may vary by employer and it's important to speak with your human resource representative about when to do so. For most employer-sponsored plans, you can add your spouse during your annual open enrollment period. Adding your spouse during open enrollment is an option each year for most employer-sponsored plans. Outside of open enrollment, you can add your spouse due to a qualifying life event, which typically must be done within 31 days of the marriage or coverage loss date.
Supporting Documents
You may be asked to submit legal proof of your marriage. These documents may include:
- Marriage certificate or license
- Proof of ongoing marriage, such as a joint bank statement or tax form.
