6 Things to Consider During the Open Enrollment Period
November 01, 2023 | Tags:
The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is the time of year when you can enroll in a new Individual and Family health plan or make changes to your current plan. This year, OEP starts Nov. 1 and ends on Jan. 15. However, for coverage that starts Jan. 1, you will need to enroll by Dec. 15. Learn more about this year’s OEP and how you can find a plan that is right for you.
Making the Most of OEP
Choosing the right health insurance is an important decision. When picking a plan, you will want to think about the following:
- How often will you use your plan? Each plan has different premiums (monthly cost) and deductibles (the amount you pay before insurance starts to pay) from which you can choose. If you expect to use your plan often, consider enrolling in a plan with lower deductibles, or out-of-pocket costs.
- Are your doctors and hospitals covered? Doctors and hospitals that are covered in-network mean that your health plan will help pay for the costs associated with each service. Your plan may not cover the costs for doctors and hospitals that are out of network.
- Are your medications covered? It’s important to check that your prescriptions are also covered on your plan. If you currently don’t take medications but your doctor later prescribes one, talk with your physician to make sure the drug prescribed is covered under your plan.
- Should I include dental and vision coverage with my health plan? You may want to consider adding dental and vision coverage to your plan if you plan to use those services. Regular dental and vision checkups are important building blocks in building a foundation of wellness.
- Am I eligible for tax subsidies? Depending on your household income and how many people will be covered on the plan, you may be eligible for tax subsidies to help pay your premiums. Check to see if you are eligible for subsidies here.
- Are wellness benefits included in my plan? All of our Individual and Family plans include wellness benefits like diabetes and chronic condition management programs, as well as Medical Mutual’s Bravo Wellness Program that rewards you for completing health-related activities.
