Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere. To be prepared for minor emergencies, you’ll want to have a first aid kit ready.

Having this medical pack at home or in your car allows you to respond to common injuries in a quick, effective way. You can buy one at your local drugstore, but consider customizing your own with items specific to your health needs.

Here is a list of items you might include in your first aid kit:

Basic Supplies

“Basic supplies” are items to aid in the cleaning and covering of minor injuries like scrapes, cuts, burns, stings and more.

Store your first aid kit in a cool, dry place where it’s easily accessible:

  • Adhesive cloth tape or medical tape
  • Antiseptic solution or wipes
  • Bandages (assorted strips and sizes)
  • Cotton swabs
  • Disposable gloves (latex-free)
  • Gauze pads
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Instant cold compress
  • Oral thermometer
  • Scissors and tweezers
  • Triangular bandage (for makeshift splints)

Medications

Talk with your primary care provider (PCP) about which medications might be best for you to have in your first aid kit.

Consumable items, including ointments, should be in single-use packaging. Regularly check your first aid kit to replace expired mediations and solutions, and replenish supplies:

  • Antacids
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Antihistamine (for severe allergies)
  • Aspirin
  • Burn gel
  • Hydrocortisone (for minor skin irritation and rashes from insect bites, poison ivy, and more)
  • Pain relievers (Acetaminophen or ibuprofen)

When to seek professional medical attention

Seek medical attention if health conditions worsen, such as:

  • Bleeding from wounds continues.
  • Signs of infection are present.
  • A fever of 103°F or higher occurs.

Keep a list of emergency contact numbers on hand, such as local emergency services, your family healthcare provider, Poison Control and more.

Preparedness also includes what apps are installed on your phone. Medical Mutual members can use the MedMutual mobile app to Find a Provider, access their ID card information and much more.
